A Different Kind of School

Montessori is a different kind of school. Here children learn by exploration and self-discovery. They aren’t forced to memorize or sit at desks, but they don’t play all day either. Instead they learn through experience as they complete carefully designed tasks that enhance intelligence as well as physical and psychological abilities.

This innovative philosophy awakens an inquisitive thirst for learning that remains a driving force throughout the rest of their lives.

Montessori is different because it recognizes that children learn differently from adults–that they’re not just adults in small bodies. The philosophy is based on a child’s needs for freedom within limits.

The most important years of mental growth are the first six years of life when unconscious learning is gradually brought to the conscious level. It is during that time that children possess unusual sensitivity and mental powers for absorbing and learning from their environment that are unlike those of adults both in quantity and capacity.

Dr. Maria Montessori was an outspoken advocate children’s rights. She believed that children working to develop themselves into adults would lead to world peace.
